OCI photo requirements

OCI photo requirements and specifications, explained

The photo is the most common reason an OCI application stalls. The government portal validates the uploaded file against strict specifications, and the printed photo in your packet has its own rules. Here is exactly what the OCI photo requirements are, for adults, children, and babies.

OCI photo size and specifications

The same photo is used twice: uploaded to the portal during the online application, and printed for the physical packet you mail to VFS. A file that passes one use but not the other is a common trap — the print must be a true 2 × 2 inches, and the upload must meet the pixel and file-size limits at the same time.

OCI signature specifications

The signature upload must be a JPEG in a 3.5 × 1.5 (width × height) ratio: sign in black or blue ink inside a plain box on white paper, crop tightly to the box, and upload. The signature must match the one on the printed application form.

Baby photo requirements and the thumb impression

Babies and young children follow the same 2 × 2 inch photo rules, with a few practical allowances: lay the baby on a plain white sheet for the background, keep toys, pacifiers, and other people's hands out of the frame, and try for eyes open — for newborns, an eyes-closed photo is usually tolerated, but everything else still applies. A child who cannot sign uses a thumb impression instead of a signature: the thumb print goes in the signature box on the form and is uploaded in place of the signature image.

Fixing a photo before you upload

Phone photos almost never match the specs as taken — they are the wrong shape, too large, or off-center. OCI Guide's workflow includes a photo tool that runs entirely in your browser: it crops and resizes your photo to the 2 × 2 inch specification and your signature to the 3.5 × 1.5 ratio, checks the file size, and produces a print-ready sheet of six photos. Nothing is uploaded to us — the file never leaves your device.

Common questions

What size photo is required for an OCI application?

A square 2 x 2 inch (51 x 51 mm) photo on a white background. The portal upload must be a JPEG between 200 x 200 and 900 x 900 pixels, within the portal's file-size limit.

Can I wear glasses in my OCI photo?

It is safer not to. Glasses can cause glare and shadows that get the photo rejected; the guidelines ask for a clear, front-facing photo with eyes open, and no head covering except for religious reasons.

What does a baby use instead of a signature for OCI?

A thumb impression. It goes in the signature box on the printed form and is uploaded in place of the signature image, the same as for any child who cannot sign.
